Roll up roll up….
Posted: June 20, 2011 Filed under: Absolutely Nothing To Wear 1 CommentOr don’t, as the case may be. I’m talking about men and the trend for rolling up their already skinny, tapered jean.
I know this has been around for a while, seen first on the Milan and Paris catwalks and slowly filtering down ever since. So it wasn’t a huge surprise that on a recent visit to Westfield shopping centre in London (the Mac store – the only reason to ever ever go there) I noticed they were absolutely everywhere but on the most unlikely of candidates. If I’m really truly honest, I sort of liked it. I liked the confidence with which it was worn and the tight neatness of the roll, more than the fashion itself perhaps. The hilarity came from the shock and total incomprehension shown by my husband who was the first to spot the many male ankles surrounding him. “Why would you do that?” he kept saying as he pushed his way through in his twisted, loose, rolled down, Levis. Which I would like to go on record as saying , I like much much more than the male skinny jean. Especially when it’s on my husband.
What did confuse me about all the ankle exposure wasn’t so much the style of jean (very tapered) worn with the espadrille pump (an understandable shoe choice) but it was the person wearing said ensemble. They weren’t fashion types, they were groups of twenty and thirty something boys (men) who just didn’t strike me as tapered jean wearers. They were more loose and lager than skinny and sushi. And then, to my husband’s complete horror, the particular group we were following and observing, took a sharp right turn and went in to Topman. “What are they doing???” he exclaimed, a little too loudly. Maybe we should just put it down to being a generation divide. I think it’s safe to say he will never roll up his jeans, thank goodness, I on the other hand just popped to the village shop in a pair of rolled up PPQ skinnies and my black and white brogues and it felt pretty darn good.
The men in Westfield did not look anything like this. Just thought that was worth mentioning.

Is it better to smell like your mother or your mother in law?
Posted: June 18, 2011 Filed under: Absolutely Nothing To Wear Leave a commentMy husband isn’t really one for lady fragrances, he refers to perfume as aftershave, but then again he doesn’t know the difference between a skirt and a dress, so you can see the problem.
I’ve often asked him if he likes my perfume, likes the smell, thinks of me when he smells it, that kind of thing and he’s always said, “yes yes, it’s lovely”. I wear YSL Rive Gauche….or at least I did until the other day when I asked the same question and he replied, “yes I really like it, reminds me of my Mum”. Is that a good thing? I don’t know. Should it worry me? Do I want to remind my husband of his Mum?
So, I was coming to the end of my bottle of regular Rive Gauche and decided that rather than buying more, I’d have a change. So, I looked through the myriad bottles of half worn perfume which line my bathroom shelf, and decided to go for Coco by Chanel, which I’ve always loved….and which reminds me of my Mum. You can see where this is going. One evening, wearing said perfume, we were lying on the sofa watching CSI, in that precious hour between the kids and our own bed time, and suddenly he said ;
“I really like your new aftershave”
“It’s the one my Mum always wears” I replied, testingly.
“That’s ok” he said, nuzzling a little closer.
But is it ok? Who should I smell like, my mum or my mother in law? Or should I just start completely from scratch and find a whole new smell.
Oh the dilemmas I find myself in. Life is really never simple.
Absolutely Nothing To Watch – Bored To Death
Posted: June 17, 2011 Filed under: Absolutely Nothing To Watch Leave a commentNot many TV series escape my attention so when I find something of this caliber I’ve not seen, and with two whole seasons to watch, well it’s sad to say but I get quite excited.
After the success of his first novel, part time society columnist, Jonathan Ames (Jason Schwartzman) is struggling with his second. He drinks too much wine and smokes too much weed, and as such his girlfriend has left him along with his inspiration (this is not a situation I can relate to. I haven’t written a novel).
So Jonathan does the only thing he can do in this situation. He puts an ad on Craig’s List and starts moonlighting as a private detective…with reasonable rates.
With Raymond Chandler in his pocket, noir in his veins and leather patches on his elbows Jonathan hits the bars, bordellos and burger joints of Brooklyn looking for missing sisters, lost dogs and cheating lovers.
With a little assistance from his best pal, and cartoonist, Ray (Zach Galifianakis – in one of his best roles). And some serious hindrance from his; part-time boss, full time lothario and occasional confidant George (Ted Danson – who steals the show) Jonathan Ames is the best ‘unlicensed’ PI out there.
Bored To Death is occasionally on Sky Atlantic or season one is available to by on DVD from Monday. Season two has already aired stateside with season three on the horizon so for those of you who know how, and don’t mind doing so, there are other ways of procuring this sensational show. The way I see it, I pay for Sky and it’s going to be broadcast eventually….is that so wrong?
Oh and did I mention it has one of the best opening titles ever….
Braving the Brogue
Posted: June 17, 2011 Filed under: Absolutely Nothing To Wear, Uncategorized 1 CommentI love brogues, always have. On boys and girls of all ages. I think they’re just about the smartest shoe in the shop. But how ever much I admired them on others, I was never sure if they were something I would love on my very own feet. That was until I found the perfect pair and now I can’t take them off.
My love for brogues started a long long time ago when the only person who really made fashion brogues for ladies, was the wonderful Sir Paul Smith. I was given a pair by the press office as a gift / payment for writing some press releases. I chose them myself and so strong was my longing to own a pair, I took the last remaining size 7s. I’m a small size 6. They were pale pink leather and absolutely gorgeous. I still have them in the box they came in and I have never, ever worn them. They’re far too big, I look like a clown but I can’t bring myself to part with them. I just like opening the lid now and again and knowing that I own one of the finest pair of brogues ever made.
It was years and years until I finally plucked up the courage to start looking again and then last Summer I found them. A black and white pair of lace-less brogues from Urban Outfitters, purchased in Los Angeles, in Santa Monica to be exact. They are quite possibly the best shoes I’ve ever owned, I wear them almost every day and they have reignited my love and confidence in the brogue.
So, having overcome the fear that I was possibly too old or too short legged or just too afraid to wear them, last week I pushed it that one step further….and I think it was a step too far. I bought myself – online – a pair of tan leather brogue ankle boots. I’m quite a fan of summer dresses with bare legs and boots – biker boots and the like, not Uggs – and I thought that this could be the perfect, lighter alternative. I think I might have been wrong. You see, the great thing about biker boots is that they’re loose enough around the ankle to make them flattering, as soon as you wear any kind of short boot which is more on the fitted side, it doesn’t do anything for the length or shape of your legs. Well not mine anyway.
But the thing is I still like them and I’m convinced I’ll find a way to wear them. Or they might just sit alongside my pink Paul Smith brogues in their box, as a slight fashion mistake but very nice to look at all the same.
Absolutely Nothing To Watch – Luther
Posted: June 16, 2011 Filed under: Absolutely Nothing To Watch Leave a commentOr so I thought until I discovered the brilliant LUTHER had returned to BBC1.
Idris ‘Stringer Bell’ Elba is back as the deeply troubled but unfathomably cool Detective John Luther.
Starting his day with a black coffee and game of Russian-roulette, Luther leads his small band of equally colorful cops through the black underbelly of the nations capital. Hunting serial killers, saving strays and scheming with sociopaths. Luther and co do what ever it takes to catch the bad guys whilst trying to stay on the right side of the law, just.
On the trail of the seemingly omnipotent slasher Spring-heeled Jack, Luther is once again making the wrong decisions for the right reasons. Last seasons enemies are pretending to be friends and his previous enemies are the ones he trusts. But will they all make it to the end of the season?
Judging by last nights episode, probably not.
Some parents are saying that Dr Who is getting too scary for kids. Well make sure they’re tucked up long before 9pm on Tuesday nights because mummy’s going to need the space behind the sofa…
Get on iPlayer and get watching.
Now the big question; why only four episodes!?
Absolutely Nothing To Cook
Posted: June 16, 2011 Filed under: Absolutely Nothing To Eat Leave a commentNot really one to start posting recipes and things I’ve made, but the meal I cooked last night was particularly delicious and therefore, I think, worth sharing.
It was Lemon Sole with Salsa Verde and steamed Samphire.
And here’s how I did it, with a little help from Mr Oliver
The salsa verde was very satisfying indeed – to both make and eat.

Merchant and Mills – the prettiest pins in the box
Posted: June 15, 2011 Filed under: Absolutely Nothing To Wear, Uncategorized Leave a commentMy sewing skills aren’t anything to boast about. I’m pretty good at cushion covers and Christmas stockings and I absolutely love my John Lewis Mini Sewing Machine, but when it comes to dressmaking, I’ve never been brave enough to try. But, if there’s one website to make me even consider giving it a go, it would have to be Merchant and Mills.
Not only do they have some of the loveliest patterns I’ve seen but they also have the prettiest packs of buttons and pins I could ever wish to own.
So if you fancy yourself as a bit of a dressmaker or if a box of pins could quite easily make you smile, then have a look. They’re absolutely gorgeous.
Bring Your Own Blanket
Posted: June 14, 2011 Filed under: Absolutely Nothing To Wear, Uncategorized Leave a commentWith this rather unpredictable British Summer we’ve been enjoying of late, it seems we are facing yet more style questions and decisions. Not just whether to wear bare legs, tights or leggings….always go bare after June I say…..but now we have another accessory to consider, the blanket.
I went to a friends 40th birthday party at the weekend which was, as any June party would be, hoping for fine weather or at least to be warm and dry enough to enjoy the garden and not all be huddled around the kitchen table. So, very sensibly, my friend sent an email to the ladies of the party asking us all to bring our own blankets as she only had a few and was sure knees would need to be kept warm if we were to enjoy the garden. I rather liked this request, it made me smile and then the question entered my dreadfully affected fashion head, what kind of blanket should I take??? Now, being rather partial to blankets and quilts, I have quite a few, of all varieties. I went through a crochet blanket phase – buying not making – and found quite a few fabulous, brightly coloured vintage “granny” offerings through Ebay and little antique shops. And then there are the ubiquitous Cath Kidston checked picnic blankets, of which I also have a few. All I must add, have been picked up in the CK online sale and from one of my new favourite places, Bicester Village. If you haven’t been there, you must.
And then there are my growing collection of Indian quilts which are bright and colourful and quite possibly my most precious home ware possessions. So you see my dilemma. All these are blankets and quilts to be proud of but are they right for a 40th birthday party in a London garden will some very chic ladies in attendance and one or two cocktails. I ruled out the Cath Kidston ones immediately. They suit my country life perfectly but will remain my guilty “oh I just buy her stuff because the children love it” secret.
There was also the matter of my outfit to consider. I’m a person who spends perhaps too much thought on how things look together. Shoes, jacket, bag, scarf…all important accessories to coordinate and the blanket needed to treated in just the same way. If I was going to spend the evening in the garden with my blanket, it simply had to match my outfit. So that meant the crochet offerings were also quickly ruled out.
In the end I went for a beautiful grey throw sort of blanket with embroidered flowers running along the hem. It was understated and warm and complimented my grey silk dress and black and white brogues beautifully. Not that anyone will have noticed, but I did and that’s all that matters in situations such as these.
So there it is. Apparently there have been quite a few wedding invitations sent recently with the same “bring your own blanket” footnote and I personally think it’s a pretty wonderful addition to the British Summer dress code. So bring out your blankets, but remember they may end up saying more about you than you think.
The Kids Are Alright
Posted: June 10, 2011 Filed under: Absolutely Nothing To Wear, Uncategorized Leave a commentSeeing as it’s my blog and seeing as Little Lucky Seven is half my company and seeing as I’m allowed to do whatever I want on my own blog with my own company, I’ve decided to give ourselves a plug.
So, here it is.
For the best custom made kids caps anywhere in the world, go to Little Lucky Seven
They’re not only very cool indeed and worn by all kinds of discerning and very fashionable children, but it seems kids actually want to keep them on their heads. Which is rare. And even better, parents seem perfectly willing for their children to wear them. Which is a bonus all round.
They cost just £20 and are only available from the online cap shop. Each and every cap is made by a real person and sent out in its very own cap box. Which is nice enough to recycle and use to put all kinds of things in.
Here are a few photos of the caps and some of our Little Lucky Seven stars……
