ANTW Advent Calendar, Day 3 : Christmas Tree Decorating
Posted: December 3, 2011 Filed under: Absolutely Nothing To Wear Leave a commentI’ve always been quite the purest when it comes to Christmas tree decorations. I’m a white lights and ribbons kind of girl. I do like a bauble but with small children, cats and an over-excited dog, they wouldn’t last a minute in this house so I like to keep it simple. However, in recent years I have given in to a few well chosen decorations of the hanging variety which, thanks to my Mum, have made their way in to the Christmas shoe box to be used over again.
They arrive in the post usually around mid November and for the past couple of years, have been bought from the Mothership (Peter Jones). They always manage to appeal to both me and the children and there are only ever a few which is just how I like them.
The past years offerings have come courtesy of Birchcraft Design and are really lovely. The first year we had Father Christmas, a tree and a few of his reindeer and the second year brought more reindeer but this time in white. They’re wooden which means they last, unless they get chewed…but that depends on how many animals you live with. You can also buy them directly from their website so I’ve linked the images straight to the online store.
This year Peter Jones / John Lewis lost out to Ikea and a pack of four red cardboard reindeer which I love and promptly went online and ordered a few more. They also have packs of Christmas figures which include Father and Mother Christmas and 4 Christmas elves for £1.79. Be silly not to really.
The best thing about these kinds of decorations is they can be used all over the house, not just the tree. They can be hung from garlands or wreaths or used to make presents look even more tempting….although that means giving them away.
ANTW Advent Calendar : Day 2, Labour and Wait
Posted: December 2, 2011 Filed under: Absolutely Nothing To Buy Leave a commentI get very excited when I find a new online store. I had heard of the wonderful Labour and Wait on Redchurch St but never had the chance to visit. When I came across their website – whilst searching for “fishing bags” – it just about made my Christmas. I could have quite happily bought every single thing in the shop. The simplest way to describe it is hardware store mixed with the very best kitchen shop with a little bit of light reading and perfectly designed accessories thrown in.
Here’s just a selection of lovely things. Click on the image to enlarge. They look even better.
- Enamel Milk Pan £16
- Folding Ruler £8
- Folio Bag £120
- French Jam £8
- Can Opener £9
- Clothes Brush £15
- Large Pie Dish £8
- Non Drip French Candles £12
- Paper Glue £3.50
- Pestle and Mortar £28
- Labour and Wait, 85 Redchurch Street, London, E2
You can order all the products online but they state that deliveries can take up to 2 weeks depending. I reckon this one just might be worth the risk.
Absolutely Nothing To Buy : A guide to online Christmas shopping, Part I
Posted: December 1, 2011 Filed under: Absolutely Nothing To Buy Leave a commentI almost refuse to believe Christmas is so soon. I’ve only just put the heating on and dug out the woolly jumpers. Surely we’ve months to go. But oh no, it’s almost upon us and I’m reminded of the inevitable every morning when my 3 year old looks up the chimney to check Father Christmas isn’t stuck.
And so it begins, the seemingly endless shopping and the desperate thinking of something a bit different to give everyone this year. The apple chutney is made and jarred so that’s ready for the unlucky ones – just kidding, it’s actually quite delicious this year. Last year was a disaster and aptly named Apple Shit Splodge by way of a warning to recipients that it might be just a little bit special and perhaps best left unopened.
I do the majority of my shopping online. Which is something I do all year round but it gets particularly serious in December. I’m not a good present planner. I decide every year that i’ll be more organised and I never ever am. This year is the same although I do have baskets of things saved all over the world wide web. Some will make it in to stockings and others will probably get forgotten and still be there come the New Year. My largest basket is Amazon which is pretty much a one stop shop for the children. It’s full of books, DVDs, racing cars and marble games – the staple boy toys. They have every chance of ending up under the tree but its the more obscure – and quite frankly far more exciting – baskets which I fear may not be so lucky.
It’s a wonderful thing being able to store things in little online pockets until you’ve made up your mind if you like them. Much more cost effective than panic buying in real life shops. But I’ve discovered a terrible downside in my seemingly foolproof plan. These days online is just as competitive, if not more so, than on the high street with new price battles being launched on a daily basis which means bargains are there to be had but only if you’re quick. I’ve only just cottoned on to this and have seen some of the contents of my Amazon basket rising dramatically in price since I rather smuggly put them there weeks ago. And, whilst Amazon do really great deals on shipping their own stock – generally it’s free if you don’t need things super quick – you have to be wise with other retailers selling on there who aren’t quite as generous and seem to have the strangest rates and times. One quoted £8.95 with an estimated delivery time of 1st – 21st December. A rather expensive risk probably not worth taking.
So now I’ve warned of the pitfalls, I’m compiling a list of some of my favourite places to Christmas online shop. It’s taking longer than I thought due to amount of browsing I’m forced to do so I will post in a few parts.
To start off, I thought this was definitely worth sharing. Gift Genies is a brilliant one stop search engine with ideas for the very best presents for all sorts of everyone. You can search by price, type of gift or even relationship and it will direct you to a whole host of ideas from a selection of brands and link you straight through to their shop front.
They also compile gift guides for Grazia amongst others so these ladies know what they’re talking about. The brand list is pretty impressive with some very well known labels rubbing shoulders with some smaller more quirkier offerings. There is literally something for everyone and they’ve done all the hard work for you.
Part 2 will follow shortly…..
Absolutely Nothing To Open – Advent calendar
Posted: December 1, 2011 Filed under: Absolutely Nothing To Open | Tags: Absolutely Nothing To Open 1 CommentWelcome to the ANTW Advent Calendar. Each day we’ll be revealing a dose of Christmas inspiration.
Things to buy, places to go, delicious treats to cook and eat which will hopefully take you right up to the very day itself.
And to kick things off here’s number 1, my very favourite Christmas present and one I would happily own in every colour.
1 . The John Lewis Mini Sewing Machine
Available in 4 colours and only £49 which is pretty good considering how much use (in theory) you can get out of it. Plus it’s just rather lovely to look at and a brilliant gift for teens with nothing better to do.
Rugby Ralph Lauren Tweed Run – Lessons In Tweed
Posted: November 23, 2011 Filed under: Absolutely Nothing To Do, Absolutely Nothing To Watch, Absolutely Nothing To Wear Leave a commentTweed and bicycles are surely a match made in fashionable exercise heaven. This weekend sees the first Ralph Lauren Tweed Run to take to the London streets and celebrates the opening of the RL RUGBY UK flagship store – a veritable tweed emporium.
My brilliant friend Jenny Dyson and her PENCIL team have made a short film, Lessons In Tweed, which is a must watch for anyone even considering taking part and even those who aren’t.
The Ralph Lauren Tweed Run will take place in London, this Saturday 26th November and there are still places available so register HERE

New York Kitchenalia Heaven : Fishs Eddy
Posted: November 8, 2011 Filed under: Absolutely Nothing To Buy 1 CommentOn his recent (solo) trip to New York, my husband stumbled across quite possibly the best shop I have ever seen. After spending over an hour perusing collections of all kinds of fabulous kitchenalia from vintage china to ceramic glove molds , I’m happy to say he did manage to come home with some very lovely bits and pieces. I probably would have had the lot and shipped it home at great expense – I’m a sucker for kitchen things I don’t really need and this place is full to bursting. Sadly he didn’t have room for one of the portrait paintings which are all from the owners personal collection and are the perfect visual accompaniment to the towers of crockery and glass. What a wonderful wonderful place Fishs Eddy is – I think it could be the only excuse I need to take a family trip to New York in the very near future.
Absolutely Nothing To Make : Chocolate Brownies and a Pumpkin
Posted: October 30, 2011 Filed under: Absolutely Nothing To Cook, Absolutely Nothing To Make Leave a commentI hardly dare admit it but I’d never made chocolate brownies until this weekend so I decided that Halloween was as good as excuse as any to have a go. These are delicious. They contain more chocolate than can possibly be good for anyone but we’re not complaining. And we made them suitably scary with the addition of these ghoulish sticks of decorating joy.
Double Chocolate Brownies from The River Cottage Family Cookbook
by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Fizz Carr
250g good dark chocolate
200g unsalted butter
200g caster sugar
3 free-range eggs
125g plain flour
50g cocoa powder
100g broken walnuts
Pre-heat oven to 160C/gas mark 3. Put 3-4cm water into a saucepan and bring it to a simmer. Break chocolate up, cut up the butter, and place both in a mixing bowl. Put it over the pan of simmering water and turn the heat off. Stir until melted together and smooth.
In another bowl whisk the sugar with the eggs, using the balloon whisk, until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Add chocolate mixture to the eggs; mix thoroughly with wooden spoon.
Sift flour and cocoa powder and mix thoroughly. Stir in walnuts if you have decided to use them. Line the baking tin with a piece of foil and pour in the mixture. Oven gloves on. Place the tin on a shelf in the middle of the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes. Oven gloves back on. Take the tin out of the oven and stand on wire rack. Leave until cool enough to cut into squares.
And to accompany my baking we of course had to have a pumpkin who, carved by my husband, looks like he might have overindulged with one too many brownies.
Absolutely Nothing To Make or Buy : A Homemade Home…..unfinished
Posted: October 26, 2011 Filed under: Absolutely Nothing To Buy, Absolutely Nothing To Make, Absolutely Nothing To Wear Leave a commentYes, I’ll enjoy doing some needlework in front of the fire during the cold Winter months. I should have this done in time for Christmas if I do a little bit every night. That was 3 years ago and I’ve done a despairing one line of said Emily Peacock Kiss tapestry and it now sits in a bag on a shelf near the sofa laughing at me. But still I’m determined, and strangely convinced, that I will finish it. One day. Just as soon as I work out the instructions and manage to stay awake past 9pm.
I like making things but for some reason I still haven’t learned that I’m not nearly as good as I hope I am and that these crafty things take far more patience than I will ever have. I blame Kirsty and Cath Kidston and all those women I hate to like. I don’t want to be one of them, I’m too busy doing other busy, modern woman about the countryside sort of things.
So, as I get ready for another episode of Kirsty’s Homemade Britain which I shall watch whilst lounging comfortably on the piles of envelope cushions which litter my sofa (they’re addictively easy to make once you get the hang of it) I’ve found something else I want to have a go at. These advent calendar kits from Cox and Cox not only look lovely in the pictures but I reckon they’ll look even lovelier when hanging on the wall and my children will think I’m the best Christmas Mum in the world. My husband says I’ll never finish them and he’s seen a chocolate Lego calendar which they’ll like much more. He’s probably right but I’m going to give it a go. I’ll just try the one – they can share, they’ll like that. Who’d want a chocolate advent calendar all made and ready to go, when they can have a half-finished, homemade one filled with whatever I can find lying around the house the night before. No contest surely.
